An investigation by the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office and the Cleveland Police Department concluded with the identification of a suspect in 53 burglaries across Bradley County. Howard Montgomery Callaway, 35, was arrested on April 13th at his home on Woodlawn Avenue hours after the BCSO responded to a burglary in progress on Letha Lane. Callaway was identified as a suspect based on the homeowner’s description of the man she saw coming out of her house and the vehicle he was driving. Since his arrest Callaway has cooperated with investigators to solve a series of burglaries in the city and county between October 12, 2009 and the date of his arrest. The investigation revealed the thief took only jewelry that resulted in combined losses in excess of $204,000. Most pieces were sold to a scrap metal dealer outside the county and could not be found when detectives attempted to recover the property. Callaway remains in the Bradley County jail without bond on initial charges of aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, and theft. He will face additional charges stemming from the 53 burglaries. Over the last four weeks BCSO’s Criminal Investigation Division and CPD’s Detective Division devoted considerable time to bring the investigation to a successful conclusion.
