Ken Lanell Richmond, who Bradley County Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested Monday evening for possessing two pounds of marijuana, will have federal charges in addition to those already filed in the Bradley County court system. A convicted felon from Alabama, Richmond appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Susan K. Lee in District Court at Chattanooga on Tuesday for an initial appearance on weapons and narcotics charges. Judge Lee ordered Richmond detained until further proceedings are held. Drug Enforcement Unit detectives had initial contact with the rental car Richmond was driving on I-75, but he exited the interstate and stopped near the intersection of 25th Street and Georgetown Road. Permission was given to search the vehicle and detectives found a .38 caliber revolver and a garbage bag containing approximately two pounds of marijuana in the passenger compartment. During the investigation it was learned Richmond and his passenger, Demetria Shafi, were en-route from Alabama to her home in West Virginia. Shafi is charged with possession of marijuana for resale and is not expected to face federal charges. She is being held at the Bradley County jail under bond of $50,000. Richmond’s state charges are possession of marijuana for resale and following too close. He is also being held at the Bradley County jail.
