CLEARANCE RATES UP, CRIME DOWN Print
Thursday, 14 May 2009
In the TBI 2008 “Crime in Tennessee” report, criminal offenses in Bradley County were down by six percent over the year before. In addition, the BCSO has increased cleared cases to 50.89 percent. The national average of clearance rates for all law enforcement agencies is around 30 percent, so that 50.89 percent clearance rate means the BCSO has become one of the most effective and efficient law enforcement agencies in the entire nation.

By making better use of existing BCSO resources, putting more deputies on patrol and partnering with business and the private sector, we have been able to deter more crime and solve more crime. The citizens of Bradley County can be proud of the dedicated men and women of the BCSO, as well as the effective partnership we have with the community. By working together, law enforcement, business and private citizens can make a difference for the better.

Another way the BCSO has made a difference in the quality of life here in Bradley County is through our Inmate Work Program. This continues to be one of our most successful programs; both in terms of savings to the county and the sense of purpose it offers the inmates.

Rather than staying cooped up in a jail cell, many inmates are anxious to fill their time with productive activity. They are very proactive in the cleaning and upkeep of the jail. They sweep, mop and wax floors, cook food and wash dishes in the kitchen, do laundry, paint, disinfect the common areas, sort food and commissary items, and perform many other needed duties.

Certain qualified, low-risk inmates also stay busy outside the jail, performing much-needed  maintenance and clean-up work around the community. This is a great help to the county’s maintenance and roads department and offers great savings to the taxpayer.

These outside work crews perform a wide range of duties throughout Bradley County. One crew works full-time at the Tri-State Exhibition Center, one crew assists the Road Department with their work, one crew at the BCSO garage helps to maintain our fleet, and two crews perform roadside and litter cleanup, paint, do brickwork at schools, tend the inmate garden and perform other tasks as needed on public property.

These crews are well-supervised when away from the Justice Center and their hard work pays off in a substantial savings in tax money. They do a good job and bring a positive attitude to any task to which they are assigned. The Inmate Work Program continues to be a positive experience for everyone involved and my congratulations go out to the deputies who administer the program and the inmates who participate.
