Bradley County Sheriff’s detectives have upgraded charges for two men who they arrested in August 2006 after 45 year-old Danny Spurgeon was severely beaten while visiting the Hilltop Lounge on South Lee Highway.

Spurgeon was hospitalized for an extended period with injuries he received from being kicked in the face and beaten in other areas of his body. Deputies found him lying on the floor of the men’s restroom when they were dispatched to the business on August 18, 2006. Witnesses identified John Lee Shields and Jessee Angel Galindo as suspects in the assault. They were charged with aggravated assault.

Spurgeon was hospitalized several times until his recent death.

Shields, who is now 24 years old and resides on Pea Street, and Galindo, now 26 years old and residing on Chippawah Drive, were re-arrested on Monday after they were indicted by a Bradley County Grand Jury on second degree murder charges.

Shields posted bond and is no longer in custody. Galindo is incarcerated at the Bradley County jail. Both suspects are to appear in Criminal Court on February 11, 2008.
