Chief Bird began his law enforcement career at the age of 21 as an Orange County Florida deputy sheriff. He rose through the ranks as detective, detective sergeant, and was promoted to lieutenant as watch commander. He was later promoted to captain as commander of the Special Investigations Division, responsible for narcotic and drug investigations, vice, intelligence, and organized crime. Bird was then promoted to chief of detectives. Bird has organized and commanded multi-agency task forces for both drug trafficking and organized criminal conduct. He served twice as coordinator for a state-wide grand jury investigating drug trafficking and organized crime. He has experience in planning and initiating policing concepts and practices.

Bird received his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Rollins College, Winter Park Florida. He holds a Master of Science from the School of Theology, Cleveland, Tennessee. He is also a graduate of Rollins College Executive Development Program, Southern Police Institute Police Strategies, Metro- Dade Command and other command and leadership programs. Bird is a graduate of the 100th session of the FBI National Academy.

The Chief Deputy answers directly to the Sheriff and is responsible for the day to day operations and performance of the three bureaus: Operations (all law-enforcement), Corrections, and Administrative services.

The Chief assists the Sheriff and staff in developing policy, budget considerations, strategic investigations, policing procedures, and planning and preparing law enforcement efforts and leadership for Bradley County's current and future needs.
